Hallmark favorites Lacey Chabert and Brennan Elliott star in Sunday’s Crossword Mysteries: A Puzzle to Die For, a new Hallmark Movies & Mysteries franchise co-created by New York Times puzzle creator and editor Will Shortz.
Chabert stars as crossword editor Tess Harper, who becomes involved in a murder investigation after several of the clues in her recent puzzles are linked to unsolved art heists. She’s always keen to solve a puzzle, so she and Logan (Elliott), a no-nonsense detective, work together to solve the clues and uncover a killer.
“I dabbled in crossword puzzles as a kid,” Elliott says. He reveals that while researching enigmatology and Shortz’s work, he was shocked by the magnitude of the crossword community.
“I was blown away at how worldwide crossword puzzle solving had become. It’s a movement!” And the actor is confident that puzzle solvers and sleuths will enjoy deciphering the riddles hidden within the film. He shares, “There is a puzzle to solve in every case, so the audience isn’t just watching a movie. They are involved in the case and can solve it themselves.”
Elliott is thrilled to be reunited with one of his favorite costars and shares, “Every scene that I do with Lacey is so much fun because we have so much fun working together.” He calls their characters — a detective following the clues and a puzzle master trying to crack the code — “a great team and a formidable foe for any criminal.”
Barbara Niven and John Kapelos also star in the franchise, and Elliott reveals that three more Crossword Mysteries are in the works and could premiere as early as October.
