David Letterman bid farewell last month to The Late Show he hosted for 22 years, and his chosen replacement, Stephen Colbert, will take over with The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on Sept. 8.

Colbert left The Colbert Report in December and appears to have been very busy preparing for his new role, including growing a beard. Not to be outdone or upstaged, Letterman also has grown a beard in his retirement.

The Late Show with Stephen Colbert is in pre-production now and Colbert has been given near-full control over the format according to a report by Alex Weprin of Capital New York. Over the summer, CBS will build out a new set and production offices at the Ed Sullivan Theater for the new show.

On June 3, the new show hit the Internet with the launch of colbertlateshow.com, along wtih a YouTube channel, Facebook page and Twitter account.

On June 5, Colbert announced that New Orleans jazz muscian Jon Baptiste will be the new show's band leader, saying "His music makes the audience feel so good, we may have to install a 'Do Not Make Love' sign."  Baptisite's band, Stay Human, will join him on the show.
