"Breslin and Hamill: Deadline Artists"
Premieres Monday, January 28 at 8 PM ET/PT on HBO

Brilliant writers, tribunes of the working class and icons of the lost world of newspapering, Jimmy Breslin and his friend Pete Hamill personified New York City. For five decades, these colorful columnists spoke for ordinary people and brought passion, wit and literary merit to their reporting on their city and nation. Their writings probed issues of race, class and the practice of journalism that resonate powerfully today.

Breslin and Hamill: Deadline Artists explores their intersecting lives and careers, and celebrating the grit and charm of New York during the last great era of print journalism. The documentary film, studded with important cultural figures (Robert De Niro, Spike Lee, Shirley MacLaine, Gloria Steinem) and major writers (Tom Wolfe, Nick Pileggi, Gail Collins, Garry Trudeau), captures the charm of the old New York, while probing explosive issues of race, class and the practice of journalism that resonate powerfully in our own time.

The film offers us a master class in good writing and reporting and propel us through classic New York stories like the Bernhard Goetz, “Son of Sam,” “Central Park Five” and Crown Heights cases as well as many of the major events of the last half century, including  the Kennedy assassinations, the civil rights movement,  Vietnam. Watergate and 9/11.
