The Virunga Mountains in East Africa are home to two of the world’s most dangerous, spectacular, and least understood volcanoes - each will be explored in two separate, riveting NOVA documentaries.
NOVA “Volcano on Fire”:
Looming over Goma, a city of nearly 1 million people, is one of the world’s most spectacular, active, and dangerous volcanoes: Nyiragongo, on the East African rift. At 11,000 feet, its cone conceals a mile-wide crater that encircles a seething lava lake, bubbling and churning at nearly 1,000° F. The long-running war in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has made it difficult to study and one of the least understood volcanoes on earth. Twice in recent memory it has erupted and devastated Goma. When will it erupt again? NOVA joins an international team of volcanologists on a risky climb to Nyirangongo’s summit and down into its crater to deploy sensors and monitor the volcano’s activity. This hair-raising expedition promises to shed light on the unpredictable behavior of volcanoes and ultimately save lives.
NOVA Volcano on the Brink:
Join a team of volcanologists as they explore one of the world’s most active and mysterious volcanoes in central Africa: Nyamuragira. During a brief pause in the Democratic Republic of Congo’s decades of civil strife, an international team of experts flies by helicopter to the summit and investigates its secrets. Five years since the last major activity, scientists are eager to discover whether magma pressure is building up and threatening another eruption. As they explore the spectacular summit and gather scientific data, NOVA joins them to probe the mystery of what feeds this volcano, and the dangers it poses—both from lava and poisonous gases—to life and limb in the surrounding landscape.
