At first glance, next-door neighbors Eric Redford (Jesse Metcalfe) and April Stewart (Fiona Gubelmann) couldn’t be more different. He’s a confirmed bachelor who drives a loud sports car, plays loud music, and hosts a weekly poker game for the guys. In fact, he is the successful author of a string of books extolling the bachelor lifestyle. Oh, and he is not particularly fond of Christmas. She, on the other hand, teaches violin out of her home, plays weekly gigs with her sister, a cellist, at a local Minneapolis restaurant and wishes every day could be Christmas. April’s house is the most decorated in town come Christmastime while her new neighbor Eric’s doesn’t sport so much as a candy cane.
Eric’s mom Sarah (Mary Long) has been taking care of his sister’s two kids while she and her husband are attending a convention in Norway, but when a huge storm makes their timely return impossible and Sarah comes down with the flu, Eric is forced to move his niece and nephew Chelsea (Jenna Weir) and Liam (Liam MacDonald) over to his house. With a week leading up to Christmas, and absolutely no decorations in or on his house, the kids inform their Uncle Eric that it is his job to “make Christmas” for them.
While suffering from writer’s block as he faces a looming deadline with his publisher, Eric gives in a little at first and agrees to get the kids a tree. With April’s help, the tree gets decorated. Next, tackling the issue of presents and the annual visit with Santa Claus, it isn’t long before Eric starts getting into the spirit of the holiday, as his feelings for April grow. By the time Christmas Eve arrives, he’s basting a turkey and wondering how he ever got along without the giant Santa that keeps mysteriously popping up in his front yard.
So, what’s a confirmed bachelor-no-more to do when he realizes he’s in love with the girl next door? Does he rewrite the ending of his story, impacting the ending to the movie?
