Melinda Gordon (Jennifer Love Hewitt) sees dead people – earthbound spirits who haven’t crossed over yet, due to unresolved issues. She talks to them too, and they share the stories of how they died and their hopes for the lives of their survivors. This power, taught to her by her grandmother (June Squibb), is both Melinda’s gift and her curse.

Her paramedic husband Jim (David Conrad) doesn’t mind the non-living houseguests, perhaps because he was saving Melinda’s life when they met. Now they live in the the small town of Grandview, New York, where Melinda runs an antique shop with the help of Andrea Marino (Aisha Tyler) and Delia Banks (Camryn Manheim). Melinda’s also assisted in her spectral detective work by local university professor Rick Payne (Jay Mohr) and Eli James (Jamie Kennedy), another medium
Creator John Gray based Melinda in part on Mary Ann Winkowski, a real “spirit communicator” who also served as a consultant.

Ghost Whisperer was extremely popular, spawning an Internet spin-off (Ghost Whisperer: The Other Side), novels, a comic book series, soundtrack, and video game. Sadly, the series departed CBS after season five without a proper finale. “For a show that was about unfinished business, we didn’t get to finish,” Hewitt said.
