(Ratings for each film begin with a "star'' rating -- one star meaning "poor,'' four meaning "excellent'' -- followed by the Motion Picture Association of America rating, and then by a family-viewing guide, the key for which appears below.)

Releasing this Week:

Acrimony"Acrimony": Any fan of the series "Empire'' likely suspects that the fierce Taraji P. Henson is someone you should not do wrong to, and she reaffirms that in this melodrama from Tyler Perry -- marking an atypical dive into the genre for that usually comedic filmmaker. Henson had worked with him earlier in "I Can Do Bad All by Myself,'' and here, she plays a woman who realizes her husband (Lyriq Bent) has been cheating on her ... prompting her to seek revenge, and definitely not your garden-variety type. DVD extra: "making-of'' documentary. Crystle Stewart, Danielle Nicolet ("The Flash'') and Kendrick Cross also are in the cast. *** (R: AS, P, V) (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand)
Black Lightning: The Complete First Season"Black Lightning: The Complete First Season": Another DC Comics character joined the CW series lineup with this stylish adventure, casting Cress Williams ("Hart of Dixie'') as a charter-high-school principal who left his days as a crime-fighting vigilante long in the past. Or so he thought: The activities of a gang prompt him to take up his secret crusade for justice again, to protect both his family and the community at large. The executive producers here include "Girlfriends'' alums Salim Akil and Mara Brock Akil, and cast members also include Nafessa Williams, China McClain, Christine Adams and James Remar. DVD extras: two "making-of'' documentaries; deleted scenes; outtakes; Comic-Con panel. *** (Not rated: AS, P, V) (Also on Blu-ray)
Spinning Man"Spinning Man": Though he's not playing James Bond again, Pierce Brosnan is back in the sleuthing business in his melodrama. He plays a police detective convinced that a college professor (Guy Pearce) -- who has a reputation for getting very personally involved with students -- has something to do with the disappearance of a teenage girl. Even the teacher's wife (Minnie Driver, who also appeared in Brosnan's first Bond movie, "GoldenEye'') thinks he may have something to do with the vanishing. Jamie Kennedy and Clark Gregg (``Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.'') also are featured. DVD extras: "making-of'' documentary; audio commentary by director Simon Kaijser; deleted scenes. *** (R: AS, P) (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand)

Also Releasing this Week:

Escape Plan 2: Hades"Escape Plan 2: Hades": Sylvester Stallone reprises his role from the first "Escape Plan'' adventure in this sequel, again playing an expert at infiltrating prisons and extracting specific people from inside them. The retrieval mission is personal for him and his team this time, since one of their own (Huang Xiaoming) has been abducted and taken inside Hades, one of the most intricate and challenging facilities ever devised. Also in the cast are Curtis "50 Cent'' Jackson, Dave Bautista ("Guardians of the Galaxy''), Jaime King, Jesse Metcalfe, Titus Welliver ("Bosch") and Vincent Young (''Beverly Hills, 90210"). *** (R: AS, P) (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand)
Going to War"Going to War": Clearly timed for the Memorial Day telecast it recently had on PBS, this special finds two people who have done much documenting of wartime experiences -- journalist Sebastian Junger and author Karl Marlantes -- joined by military veterans who offer firsthand accounts of being at the front lines. Their thoughts also reflect how those who serve perceive their lives when they return home, and what the world means to them when their time spent on duty has been folded in. *** (Not rated: AS, V)
The Escape of Prisoner 614"The Escape of Prisoner 614": Recapturing the title prisoner means everything to those engaged in the pursuit in this offbeat Western. The chasers include a corrupt lawman (played by Ron Perlman) and the deputies he just fired (Martin Starr, Jake McDorman), with the latter two believing they'll get their jobs back if they reach the fugitive first. However, trusting their former boss to do the right thing may prove to be a major mistake. ** (PG-13: P, V) (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand)
